well the casio exilims are great. i have the exilim ex z80 and its about 200$. there are some other more expensive ones too, though. it has ****** recognition, quick shutter, and not just video capture. it has youtube capture. it has a large best shot menu and several other options. all of the exilims are great.
Just bought canon ixus 90 and its great. i did loads of research and it was £175 including a case and 4g card. Also a Which? best buy. fantastic shutter response and face detection. also image stabilisation. good video capture also.
Better than the exilium i previously had but they are not bad (shutter speed lets them down).
In my opinion both of the brands you mention are good but individual models vary.
