If your friend is a filmmaker, I do not think a $300 camera could do anything for him. MiniDV is the most advanced out of all the formats out there, so if you want to impress your friend, I would suggest a MiniDV Camcorder. All depends. What will your friend be using it for? A school like NYU could work well. To the person commenting on Harvard and nursing, note that Harvard doesn't offer an undergrad degree in nursing, and it is extremey unlikely that anyone at age 21 with two kids would be in graduate school already.
