For spyware, see this, that I suggested someone else some time back.

Do use the pop-up blocking feature of Windows XP, Pack 2. If you don’t have XP, use google toolbar that can block pop-ups very effectively.

People like me and you can review items on Cnet. Spybot is recommended for spyware, yet you need at least two spyware scanners. Virus scanners are only for viruses. Trojans are another story. You need a trojan scanner. As well as an adware scanner, and firewall. Some virus scanners scan for spyware too, yet you should also have a spyware scanner for they aren’t perfect.
